Rehab News:Hospital rates for child binge-drinkers soar

New figures show a huge increase in the number of children being admitted to hospital as a result of binge drinking in England.

Details obtained by the Liberal Democrats under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that the number of under-18s being treated after drinking irresponsibly has risen by 35 per cent in the last six years nationwide.

The Telegraph reported that the number of drunk children taken to hospital has rocketed from 5,900 in 2000-01, to 8,100 in 2006-07.

Gross regional disparities were apparent in the results, with the north-west of England accounting for a quarter of all admissions and the south-west reporting an 80 per cent increase in relevant admissions, according to the Telegraph.

Liberal Democrat shadow health secretary Norman Lamb said more needed to be done about the problem of underage drinking, labeling those who sold alcohol to under-18s "grossly irresponsible". He said: "Existing laws in this area need to be enforced and we must also look at the sale of cheap alcohol in supermarkets which contributes to the problem."

The revelations come in the wake of the sentencing of three teenage gang-members for kicking father-of-three Garry Newlove to death while under the influence of alcohol.
