Rehab News:Higher taxes 'could reduce binge drinking'

A charity has claimed that the government could reduce the incidence of teenage binge drinking if they increased taxes on alcohol.

An investigation conducted by Age Concern found that alcohol is now so cheap in Britain that youngsters can buy enough to binge drink with their weekly pocket money.

The average British youngster between the age of 12 and 16 receives a weekly allowance of £9.53 - and for £7.29 it's possible to buy more than three times the recommended daily alcohol allowance for men and four times that of women.

Alcohol Concern's Dan Shenker believes this is a major factor behind the increasing number of binge-drinking teenagers.

"Cheap alcohol promotions help explain just why those young people who drink can afford to do so at far greater levels than in the past," he commented.

The government is in the process of commissioning an independent review of alcohol pricing, a spokesperson for the Department of Health has confirmed, the findings of which are due next year.
