Rehab News:High alcohol consumption linked to stroke risk

Heavy drinking is more likely to increase the risk of stroke in Chinese men, according to a study published today.

The results from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, which may also apply to other ethnicities, followed up 64,338 Chinese men who participated in the 1991 China Hypertension Survey. At the time of the 1991 survey, all of the men were 40 years old and not suffering with stroke.

Researchers found that at the time of the results, 3,434 incident strokes and 1,848 fatal strokes had occurred. Of these, it was found that men who drank were more likely to suffer from a stroke.

Those who consumed over 35 drinks a week were 22 per cent more likely to suffer from a stroke and 30 per cent more likely to suffer from mortality than non-drinkers.

"Our findings are likely to be applicable to men of other ethnicities because they are based on proven physiological mechanisms," the study's authors said.

"Preventing heavy alcohol consumption (more than 21 drinks per week) among men may be one element of multi-faceted public health strategies to reduce stroke burden in the world."
