Rehab News:Half a million pounds investment in alcohol services

NHS Norfolk has identified over half a million pounds to tackle alcohol misuse within the county, and in particular to reduce the number of people who go to hospital due to alcohol use.

Recent local research commissioned by Norfolk Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) in 2007, revealed that:
in Norfolk 1 in 7 adults is estimated to binge drink
at least 43% of violent offences were reported as alcohol-related
around 13,000 children live in a household with at least one dependent drinker

Dr John Battersby, Director of Public Health for NHS Norfolk explains:

"NHS Norfolk is acutely aware of the growing problems of alcohol misuse as evidenced clearly by the research undertaken by the Norfolk DAAT. In particular Norwich has identified specific trends in behaviour which are significantly below the regional average and are a cause for concern alcohol related crimes being one."

"Norwich compared to the rest of the county has pockets of deprivation more so than other parts of Norfolk. The population is more diverse and has a significantly higher number of young people living in the area."

The funding is initially going to be used to carry out a series of pilots which will be evaluated for their effectiveness before NHS Norfolk moves forward to official implementation.
