Rehab News:Government must raise alcohol prices

The government must increase the price of alcohol if it wants to take serious action against binge drinking, Britain's leading alcohol treatment charity has said.

According to Addaction, alcohol has become more affordable and tax has remained frozen, despite rising levels of alcohol dependence and binge drinking.

The charity is confident that raising the price of alcohol would help to address the issue and lead to a reduction in people requiring alcohol treatment.

Richard McKendrick, director of operations for Addaction, said: "It is time to make a concerted effort to tackle the dangerously high drinking levels among some of our young people.

This needs a wide range of measures if it is really to be effective and increasing pricing of alcohol has to be one of those."

Recent research found that limiting a child's pocket money may help to prevent children from binge drinking, as young people who received less than £10 a week were found to be less likely to become problem drinkers.
