Rehab News:Gene variant makes Mexican Americans prone to alcoholism
New research has revealed that Mexican Americans who carry a certain haplotype (set of alleles) of the CYP2E1 gene are more susceptible to
alcoholism.
Mexican Americans have high rates of heavy drinking and alcoholism compared to other ethnic groups, suggesting that a genetic component is involved.
Now, researchers at the University of Kansas Medical Centre have studied nearly 700 Mexican Americans, including 334 alcoholics, and found that the haplotype H6 may place an individual at greater risk of alcoholism.
Professor Yu-Jui Yvonne Wan, director of the university's Liver Centre, said: "Mexican Americans have been found to have more alcohol-related problems - such as withdrawal, tolerance, and accidents - than Caucasians.
"Furthermore, Hispanics are more likely than Caucasians to continue their
alcohol dependence once it begins."
The researcher, whose study is published in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, added that further research must be conducted to determine whether H6 changes the activity of enzymes.
