Rehab News:Gene variant discovery could lead to new drug for alcohol treatment

Researchers have discovered that a variant of a gene - Grm7 - involved in communication among brain cells has a direct influence on alcohol consumption in mice.

Scientists, who were supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and the US Army, found that mice which possess the gene variant drink more alcohol than their counterparts.

"This is a noteworthy contribution, particularly since identifying genes that predispose to alcohol-related behaviours is such an arduous task," commented NIAAA director Ting-Kai Li.

However, it is not yet clear if a similar gene variant, with a similar effect on alcohol consumption, exists in humans.

Should this prove to be the case, first author Csaba Vadasz, professor of psychiatric research in the department of psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine and director of the NeuroBehavioral Genetic Research Programme at the Nathan Kline Institute in Orangeburg, NY, believes that the discovery could lead to the development of new drugs to treat alcohol dependence.

A report of the study appears in an online article in Press in Genomics.
