Rehab News:Gender and friends may influence alcohol use
Young people are more likely to drink alcohol, smoke tobacco or use drugs if their friends engage in these behaviours, researchers have claimed.
US scientists looked at data from around 4,700 people to determine whether there were links between gender, friendships and alcohol use.
They found that girls may be more susceptible to their friends' drinking behaviours and that having opposite-sex friends who drink also led to an increase in drinking, both for males and females.
Kenneth Sher, curator's professor in University of Missouri's department of psychological sciences, said: "Those who design and implement prevention approaches should take gender into account as a potentially critical moderator of prevention outcomes.
"We need to better understand the 'why' of sex differences in risk in order to shed important light on the nature of risk processes."
Publishing their findings in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, the authors suggest that parents should make themselves aware of their children's friends, particularly if the child is female or has friends of the opposite sex.
