Rehab News:Fife babies 'born alcoholics'

An alarming number of babies in Fife, Scotland are born addicted to drink and drugs, it has emerged.

Figures obtained by the Fife Free Press reveal that in the last three years, instances of newborn babies with drug and alcohol addictions has increased by 51 per cent.

That means one baby every week delivered at the Forth Park Hospital in Kirkcaldy will be addicted to alcohol or drugs.

"The reality is we've seen an increase with substance misuse in Fife in recent years," Alistair Gaw, senior manager for children and families at the hospital, told the Fife Free Press.

"It's no surprise that's now being reflected in the number of babies being born with these conditions."

The news will add further weight to calls for new measures to limit the availability of alcohol.

The devolved government is Scotland is already considering plans to target supermarkets which sell cheap alcohol, as there are claims that this leads to more alcohol abuse.
