An alcoholism expert has claimed that if you understand addiction and address the real causes of the problem, addiction can be eliminated for life.

According to Ryan Thorpe, a certified chemical dependency counsellor, there are three major factors that contribute to the "trap" of addiction - cravings, depression and guilt.

Mr Thorpe claimed that, in order for a rehabilitation programme to be successful, the addict must be helped to eliminate each of these factors "in a fundamental, lasting way".

"No one can do it for him or her, no evaluation or analysis by an outside party can hope to change a person's world like they themselves can," Mr Thorpe remarked, adding: "The amazing thing is that when we see these factors fully addressed, we also see a person literally walk away from the addiction once and for all."

The expert's claims are likely to be controversial, as the standard view among alcohol treatment professionals is that people who are in recovery from alcoholism will continue to view themselves as recovering addicts for life.

However, the counsellor insists that his patients, whose cravings, depression and guilt are all thoroughly addressed, are "living proof that addiction can be cured".
