Rehab News:Expert reveals extent of alcohol abuse among Suffolk youths

A significant number of Suffolk youths are receiving alcohol treatment, according to the coordinator of a local substance abuse team.

Simon Aalders, who coordinates the Suffolk Drug and Alcohol Action Team, said that of the 225 young people treated for substance abuse in the county over the last year, a significant proportion were treated for alcohol-related problems.

"The scope of the problem in Suffolk is fairly typical of any similar urban or rural area, but what the figures do show is that long-term alcohol misuse is a serious issue for the community," he told the local Evening Star.

Mr Aalders warned that alcohol addiction can take over a person's life and affect families and friends.

"The age of people presenting (symptoms) to doctors is getting younger," he continued, adding that there is nothing to indicate any change in this trend at present.

The expert also said that the team encourages people to think about their own behaviour and about how their drinking affects others.

Concerns have been growing about alcohol abuse throughout the UK, with a new scheme being considered for the north of England which would seek to reduce excessive drinking in the region.
