Rehab News:Exercise can reduce Cannabis Use

Researchers at Vanderbilt University are studying heavy users of cannabis to help understand what exercise does for the brain – contributing to the field of research regarding the effect exercise provides in treatment and prevention.

Participants in the study saw a significant decrease in their cravings for the drug after just a few sessions on the treadmill – it is the first such study to demonstrate that exercise can reduce cannabis use in persons who don't want to stop.

The twelve participants, selected as they met the criteria for being "cannabis dependent" whilst not wanting to stop, showed a reduce craving for cannabis by more than 50% after 10 x 30 minute sessions on a treadmill over a two week period.

In the US, cannabis abuse or dependence has increased across all age groups in the past decade. Treatment admissions for cannabis dependence have rise from 7% of total addiction treatment admissions in 1998 to 16% by 2009

Co-author of the study Mac Buchowski Ph.D, director of the Vanderbilt Energy Balance Laboratory said the importance of this study would continue to grow "it opens up exercise as a modality in prevention and treatment of, at least, cannabis abuse." Martin sees the study results as the beginning of an important area of research to better understand brain mechanisms of exercise in addiction.
