Rehab News:Excise duty 'deterring Irish drinkers'
Irish adults consumed more than 45 million litres of alcohol last year, meaning they are now the third biggest drinkers in Europe.
A study conducted by the Health Service Executive (HSE) found that Ireland currently lags only behind Luxembourg and Hungary in the drinking stakes.
However, the HSE noted that alcohol consumption per capita has remained static since 2003.
Indeed, the average amount of alcohol consumed per head in Ireland has even dropped over the last five years from a peak of 14.3 litres of pure alcohol in 2001 to 13.3 litres in 2006.
According to the HSE's Dr Joe Barry, the results are representative of the success of the government's policy to increase excise duty on alcohol.
"The findings show that a raise in excise duty remains an effective measure to reduce alcohol related harm in this country," he said.
Dr Barry has therefore called for excise duty to be raised by a further ten per cent in the next budget.
It is hoped that this will ultimately result in fewer people
binge drinking and needing treatment for alcohol dependency.
