Rehab News:Elderly drinking more than recommended, researchers say
Researchers have warned that elderly people could be drinking more alcohol than the recommended guidelines suggest.
A study carried out at Brandeis University reveals that nine per cent of the 12,413 over-65s evaluated consumed more than 30 drinks per month. The subjects studied were all Medicare beneficiaries.
Elizabeth Merrick, senior scientist at the university's Heller School for Social Policy and Management, explained that government initiatives to curb alcoholism tend to focus on a younger generation.
"Even though alcohol problems are more prevalent in younger people, a substantial proportion of older adults are consuming alcohol in amounts that exceed recommended guidelines," she added.
However, the research also found that two-thirds of subjects did not drink at all, while one-quarter kept their drinking within the recommended guidelines.
Meanwhile, a new scheme in southern Scotland to screen patients who suffer from a condition that could be related to alcohol consumption found that one-fifth could suffer from a drinking problem.
