Australia's first ever national study into the effects of alcohol on third parties has been launched by an alcohol rehabilitation foundation, it has been reported.

According to ABC News, the study, which is scheduled to last for two years, will assess how drinking impacts on the general public.

Particular attention will be paid to the effects of alcohol use by individuals on their family members.

Darryl Smeaton, chief executive of the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation, believes that there is already evidence that alcohol has a significant impact on family relationships and property damage - although admits the implications have yet to be fully quantified.

"We do know that there is significant harm to other people, and that's why it is groundbreaking, it's never been assessed to the full extent in Australia," he told the news service.

It is hoped that having discovered the magnitude of alcohol's effects on third parties, the results can be used to limit its impact and improve alcohol treatment methodology.
