Rehab News:Drinks industry and government to address problem drinking
The government is considering cracking down on the sale of cheap alcohol amid concerns about the rising rate of binge drinking among young people.
Home office minister Meg Hillier has revealed that the government is collaborating with the drinks industry to address pricing and promotions, although harsh restrictions are thought to be unlikely.
The move follows comments made by the chief constable of Cheshire, Peter Fahy, who said that alcohol was too cheap and too readily available.
Liberal Democrats' culture spokesman Don Foster told politics.co.uk that the government has been "burying its head in the sand" over the issue of binge drinking.
"The reality is that since Labour came to power ministers have systematically failed to enforce the law on shops selling alcohol to underage children," Mr Foster claimed.
"Labour was more interested in making wholesale changes to Britain's licensing regime than properly addressing the issue of binge drinking."
The joint review by the Home Office and the Department of Health will investigate how cheap alcohol promotes binge drinking, although ministers have admitted that promotions are a legitimate business tool and, as such, are unlikely to be banned.
