Rehab News:Drinking culture has greatest effect on bar staff
New figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) indicate that bar staff are most likely to die from an alcohol-related death.
The statistics show that bar staff are twice as likely to die from conditions that include alcohol poisoning but not alcohol-induced accidents.
The results also noted that alcohol-related deaths had doubled since 1991, with over 8,000 people dying in 2005 due to an alcohol reason.
Male seafarers also had a high likelihood of death from alcohol, while farmers had the lowest chance of going through an alcohol-related death.
Alcohol addiction expert Professor Martin Plant from the University of the West of England said: "There are often common characteristics related to the likelihood of drinking and therefore alcohol-related deaths."
He added: "What is important is whether the occupation has a drinking culture, the availability of alcohol and the toleration of drinking at work. That is why you find the entertainment and catering industries featuring so heavily."
The report from the ONS encouraged employers to find forms of alcohol treatment, stating: "One of the key aims of the government's alcohol harm reduction strategy is to work in partnership with the drinks industry to encourage responsible drinking. Our findings indicate that these messages need to be strongly directed at workers within the drinks industry as well as to their customers."
