Rehab News:Disadvantaged teenagers turning to drink

New research suggests that nearly half of disadvantaged youngsters start drinking before the age of 13.

A study by Positive Futures found that 42 per cent started drinking before they were 13, the BBC reports.

Almost a third (29 per cent) said they drink to get drunk.

On the consequences of drinking 50 per cent said drinking had led to fights, violence and aggression, 25 per cent said their drinking had got them into trouble with the police and 17 per cent said it led to sexual irresponsibility.

Beer was the most popular drink, with 35 per cent of respondents in the survey saying they usually drink it, while 29 per cent said they usually drank spirits.

Half said their parents condoned or did not care about their drinking, and 42 per cent knew family and friends with alcohol problems.

However, nearly half thought sports and leisure activities could reduce alcohol related crime and anti social behaviour and many wanted more health information.

Clare Checksfield, chief executive of Crime Concern, which manages the Positive Futures programme, told the BBC: "Young people are taking risks with their health and with their future by getting involved in alcohol related violence."
