Rehab News:Culture may affect access to alcohol treatment
Researchers have found that cultural stereotypes may prevent young people from seeking help for drug and
alcohol abuse.
A team of experts at the University of Montana and the PIRE Behavioural Health Research Centre of the Southwest interviewed 42 providers of behavioural healthcare, including drug and alcohol counsellors, mental health therapies, nurses, doctors and prevention specialists to determine their opinions on
alcohol treatment among minority Hispanic groups.
They found that many healthcare providers believe that family, religion and spirituality, gender roles and socioeconomic factors inhibit young Hispanic people from seeking help for substance abuse.
Dr Cathleen Willging, primary study investigator, said: "By just focusing on those factors, even the best-intentioned prevention and treatment models will result in a simplistic response to the complex social, political and economic realities that create health disparities among ethnic minority populations.
"This often results in many communities viewing mainstream health and human service institutions with suspicion," Dr Willging pointed out.
Experts believe that providers of alcohol treatment must learn to understand how their own attitudes towards culture may affect their provision of behavioural health services and address any hidden biases they may be harbouring.
