Rehab News:Culture 'needs to be considered as part of alcohol treatment provision'
Cultural stereotyping should be included in the behavioural health services involved in alcohol treatment, it is claimed.
A Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (Pire) study reported by Medical News Today highlighted factors including family, gender roles, socioeconomic factors and religion and spirituality that are believed to inhibit some ethnic minority population members from seeking help.
Social stigmas attached to behavioural health problems and a feeling of suspicion surrounding mainstream health and human service institutions have emerged in some communities, lead investigator Dr Cathleen Willging noted.
Recommendations for improved behavioural health care for patients include language services and the training, hiring and licensing of local health professionals who reflect the cultural background of their local communities, Pire revealed.
"Training should first encourage providers to think reflexively about their own value systems and the privilege that they bring to clinical encounters with patients of varying cultural, ethnic and class backgrounds," study researcher Dr Gilbert A Quintero added.
