Rehab News:Crystal meth fears raised

A report has revealed police fears about a growing epidemic in the use of crystal meth in the UK.

The leaked report written by police chiefs say the cyrstallised amphetamine drug is growing in popularity and noted a rise in the use and production of the drug in the UK in the past two to three years.

Carried out by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo), the investigation said the highly addictive drug is not yet used on the same scale as other Class A drugs such as crack cocaine.

Chief Constable Tim Hollis, who chairs ACPO's drugs committee, said: "Our concern is to focus on what we know now and to work with partners in order to warn people of the potential dangers of the drug."

Side effects from use of crystal meth can include skin ageing, gum rotting, paranoia, kidney failure and internal bleeding.

Crystal meth was reclassified as a Class A drug in January 2007. Possession of the drug could result in a seven-year jail sentence.
