Rehab News:Crime figures show drink is to blame

The British Crime Survey, published yesterday (July 19th), reveals that nearly half of all violent crime is linked to alcohol, while just 17 per cent is fuelled by drugs.

Annual statistics released by the Home Office confirm that violent crime has risen by five per cent, although there have been reductions in burglary, car crime and sex offences.

There has also been a slight increase in the amount of violent disorder, criminal damage and harassment committed at night time - up to 940,000 offences - suggesting that extensions to pub opening hours have had an impact on crime rates.

Overall, violent incidents involving alcohol have increased by 63,000 and Liberal Democrat shadow culture, media and sport secretary Don Foster said that this was "yet more evidence of the hopeless naivety of the government's belief that changes to the licensing legislation would lead to a continental drinking culture".

Mr Foster pointed out that any suggestion that the figure is not statistically significant would be of little comfort to victims.

"Ministers must urgently review the current legislation rather than continue to bury their heads in the sand," he insisted.
