Rehab News:Council seeks to improve alcohol treatment provision
Councillors in Bradford are launching a major inquiry into alcohol misuse to determine ways in which they can improve their provision of
alcohol treatment.
The inquiry will look at the effect drinking is having on people's health and on hospitals in the area with a view to easing the situation.
Elaine Byron, chair of the council's health improvement committee, said that the inquiry is designed to look in more detail at preventing
alcohol abuse, as well as the reasons why people start abusing alcohol.
"We need an accurate assessment of what impact alcohol misuse has on people and on our local health service and other services in the district and how effective those services are," she told the Yorkshire Post.
"We also want to know where we can improve our provision and whether we have enough resources to make a difference," the chairwoman added.
At five per cent, the proportion of people in the Yorkshire and Humber region who are dependent on alcohol is higher than the national average of 3.6 per cent, although it is hoped that the latest initiative will greatly reduce this figure.
