Rehab News:Concerns raised about alcohol abuse themes in music

Young people may be placed at risk of future alcoholism problems by the high proportion of popular songs that contain references to drug and alcohol abuse, experts have warned.

Research presented at the American Public Health Association's annual meeting shows that 33 per cent of the most popular songs released in 2005 contained themes linked to substance abuse, with alcohol and cannabis the most frequently portrayed.

Lead researcher Dr Brian Primack commented: "Previous research has shown that exposure to substance use messages in media is linked to actual substance use in adolescents.

"That is why we need to be aware of exposures such as these, especially when they are associated with highly positive consequences and associations."

The study, which analysed 279 of 2005's most popular songs, found that the proportion of drug and alcohol abuse themes varied greatly between musical genres.

For example, rap music contained the most references to substance abuse (77 per cent), followed by country (37 per cent) and R&B/hip hop (20 per cent).

However, just nine per cent of pop music contained themes relating to drug or alcohol abuse.
