Rehab News:Club drug effects compared to brain injury
Use of the popular recreational drug Ecstasy inflicts damage to the brain akin to a traumatic brain injury, researchers claim.
Scientists from the University of Florida have found similarities between the chemical effects of drug's use and damage suffered via a sharp blow to the head.
These include cell death, loss of memory, potentially irreversible brain damage, brain swelling and death.
As well as Ecstasy - also called MDMA - other forms of methamphetamine were also studied and found to have similar effects.
Firas Kobeissy, a postdoctoral associate in the College of Medicine department of psychiatry and study member, said: "We found that a lot of brain cells are being injured by these drugs.
"That's alarming to society now. People don't seem to take club drugs as seriously as drugs such as heroin or cocaine."
One version of methamphetamine, crystal meth, is becoming more popular in the UK, according to a leaked investigation report by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo).
Its side effects include skin ageing, gum rotting, paranoia, kidney failure and internal bleeding.
