Rehab News:Chief medical officer backs increased alcohol taxation

The chief medical officer for England believes that tax on alcohol should be increased to tackle the number of people with alcohol-related health problems, it has emerged.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Sir Liam Donaldson said that he would "strongly commend" increased taxation as there is "quite strong" evidence that raising the price of alcohol helps to address excessive drinking.

On the subject of extended licensing hours, the chief medical officer indicated that he had not been in favour.

"Some of us worried about the decision when it was brought in and any review of the policy would be welcome," he commented.

Sir Liam also expressed concern about the overall level of alcohol misuse and the rising levels of cirrhosis, with recent figures showing that more than 100 men and women are admitted to hospital with alcohol-related liver disease every day.

"Tobacco is a good example of a public health problem that is in hand, but when we turn to obesity and alcohol misuse those are not yet anywhere near under control," he remarked.
