Rehab News:Cheap drink blamed on rise in alcoholism

More experts have added their voices to concerns that low-cost strong cider drinks are causing alcoholism in young people.

Initially Sainsbury's was criticised by police and health chiefs for selling super-strong cider at very low prices – sometimes only 26 pence a pint.

Now research by an alcohol addiction welfare centre in Leicester shows that the gap between bar and supermarket prices means that some drinkers can drink up to 200 units a week for £27.

This amount of alcohol could cost in excess of £200 if bought in a bar or pub, claims the manager of the Anchor Centre, John Chalmers.

He told the Leicester Mercury: "They are drinking the things which give them the quickest alcohol buzz.

"Some of these ciders are 7.5 and nine per cent in strength."

Official recommendations state the maximum amount of alcohol per week for men should be 21 units a week and 14 for women.

Sainsbury's denied it was being an irresponsible retailer.
