Rehab News:Charity aims to reduce teenage drinking

Britain's largest specialist drug and alcohol treatment charity has called for off-trade promotions in supermarkets to be curbed, amid concerns that the practice may be encouraging young people to drink heavily discounted alcohol before going out.

Addaction claims that parents and schools should also play a greater role in preventing this so-called 'pre-loading' practice, which teenagers commonly employ to avoid paying more for alcohol in bars and clubs.

The charity revealed that a growing number of 14 to 16-year-olds are drinking cheap alcohol at home or in public, as beverages purchased in supermarkets can be up to three times cheaper than those licensed venues.

Carmel Swan, manager of Addaction's centre in Derby, revealed: "Some young people have admitted to drinking at least half a large bottle and sometimes more before hitting the town.

"In many cases the damage has been done before they've even left home."

The charity's manager of services for young people, Rebecca Cheshire, said that the excessive amounts being drunk, and at younger ages, is concerning.

"Tackling off-trade promotions and under-age sales alone won't work as we know that many young people are getting drink from relatives and friends," she noted.

"Young people need to know how to manage drinking and enjoy socialising without putting their safety at risk."
