Rehab News:Calls for tougher anti alcohol measures
A coalition of health organisations and pressure groups named the Alcohol Health Alliance UK (AHA) has urged the government to do more to curb the rise in alcohol-related diseases.
With more than 20 organisations banding together for the campaign, the AHA hopes to put alcohol awareness firmly on the public agenda, citing the rising health, social and economic problems of
alcohol abuse.
Among the measures proposed are an increase in taxation on beer and spirits, tougher rules on alcohol advertising before 21:00 and a reduction in the drink driving limit to the EU standard of 0.5g/l.
Professor Ian Gilmore, chair of the AHA and president of the Royal College of Physicians, was among those leading the calls to do more to help people
stop drinking.
"The very fact that 24 independent organisations have come together in this way shows how seriously we all take the impact of alcohol misuse on the nation's health," he said.
"Unless we act now to stem the rising tide of excessive drinking, particularly in the young, we will see yet more people dying prematurely in early adult life."
The AHA says
alcoholic liver cirrhosis has increased by 95 per cent since 2000, while overall alcohol related deaths are also on the increase.
