Rehab News:Calls for drink driving limit reduction

The Scottish justice secretary has called for the British government to reduce the drink-driving limit.

Kenny MacAskill also urged the introduction of random breath-testing in a letter to UK transport secretary Ruth Kelly.

He suggested that with the advent of faster cars and more cars on the road since the introduction of the limit in 1967, the government needs to reconsider bringing down the limit on the amount of alcohol people can consume before driving.

Mr MacAskill asked Ms Kelly to reduce the limit from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml of blood. He hopes that a change in the legislation will help bring down the rising death toll on Scotland's roads, one in nine of which are alcohol-related.

"We need to have a lower limit, one that sends out a clear message that driving after you've had a drink isn't acceptable - it's dangerous," he said.

The northern Irish government is currently considering introducing a reduction of the drink-driving limit, according to the Belfast Telegraph.
