Rehab News:Brain system found to prevent alcoholic cravings
Researchers recently discovered a system in the brain that stops the alcohol cravings experienced by alcoholics.
The 'Orexin' system, which consists of a group of cells in the hypothalamus, may even prevent relapse among those in recovery from alcohol.
According to scientists at Melbourne's Howard Florey Institute, the cells produce a substance called Orexin, which is now known to be involved in the 'high' felt after alcohol consumption.
"Orexin reinforces the euphoria felt when drinking alcohol, so if a drug can be developed to block the Orexin system in humans, we should be able to stop an
alcoholic's craving for alcohol, as well as preventing relapse once the
alcoholic has recovered," said Dr Andrew Lawrence.
"Our research shows that alcohol addiction and eating disorders set off common triggers in the brain, so further investigations may uncover drug targets in the Orexin system to treat both conditions," he added.
However, the researchers stressed that any therapeutic Orexin-blocking drug would need to be tested thoroughly to prove its long-term safety before being made available to alcoholics.
