Rehab News:Brain's role in cocaine addiction revealed
A biological lack of willpower in the brain could hold the key to understanding why some cocaine users becoming addicted to the drug.
Scientists from Trinity College Dublin claim they may have identified why some people suffer long-term cocaine addictions while others are able to use it only socially.
According to Dr Hugh Garavan, brain scans have discovered that the areas of the brain that are responsible for decision-making and controlling behaviour are altered by the drug.
This "biology behind willpower" may offer an insight into why some people become dependent on cocaine and others not, the scientists argue.
"Understanding the role that our brain plays in addiction may also have important implications for treating long-term addiction and designing intervention therapies," Dr Garavan said.
He added that pharmacological solutions to treat cocaine addiction could be developed as a result of the scientists' discovery.
The research was to be presented this week at a Royal Society meeting on the neurobiology of addiction.
Last week, scientists from the US department of energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory suggested more treatment options for cocaine abusers could be developed following their discovery that the drug affects brain metabolism.
