Rehab News:Binge drinking curtailed by simple pamphlets

Sending a simple information leaflet to drinkers in the general population can help to reduce the incidence of binge drinking, a study led by the University of Alberta has suggested.

As part of the investigation, which was jointly conducted with the University of Toronto, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the Public Health Agency of Canada, self-help materials were provided to 877 male and female drinkers with an average age of 43.

Pamphlets were then mailed to them which requested that they compare their drinking habits with the average male or female in the general Canadian population.

According to Doctor Cameron Wild, lead author of the paper and a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, this information led many people to curtail their drinking and even seek out alcohol treatment.

"Many heavy drinkers mistakenly believe that their behaviour is more common than it actually is," Dr Wild said.

"By seeing how their alcohol use compares to actual population norms, this can motivate heavy drinkers to re-evaluate their use of alcohol."

When contacted six months later, a ten per cent reduction in binge drinking rates was reported by those people who had received a pamphlet compared with a control group of 850 drinkers.
