Rehab News:Beer mats used to tackle underage drinking

A new scheme using beer mats has been launched to tackle underage drinking and anti social behaviour.

Leominster and Area Drugs and Alcohol Forum have launched a series of beer mats featuring images of young people who are drunk, and the hope is their message will encourage people to think twice before supplying alcohol to under 18s, 24 Dash reports.

The Herefordshire Community Safety and Drugs Partnership found that the problem of underage drinking was caused not only by underage people buying alcohol themselves, but also by adults who are buying alcohol for them.

Geoff Hughes, chair of Herefordshire Community Safety and Drugs Partnership, told the website: "Underage drinking is a problem that can have serious consequences for people in our communities.

"Underage drinkers can face serious health issues, as well as putting themselves and others at risk of accidents and injuries.

"We want adults to realise that they have a crucial part to play in tackling this problem and taking responsibility for the welfare of young people and the community as a whole."

The beer mats will be distributed through off licenses and other alcohol retailers.
