Bars and nightclubs are to blame for excessive alcohol consumption, not off-licenses, according to researchers.

A study by experts at the Pardee Rand Graduate School in California suggests that bars and clubs have a sizeable effect on problem drinking in adults, even though they only accounted for six per cent of alcohol retail licenses in the area under investigation.

The researchers found that people living within a mile of a bar or club were more likely to binge drink and consume excess alcohol.

Study author Dr Khoa Truong said: "Usually people think that liquor stores define a neighbourhood's alcohol consumption, but we didn't find any relationship between them and problem drinking among the adult population in California."

"If the number of minor-restricted establishments increases, on average, from zero to two in a neighbourhood, the prevalence of heavy episodic drinking in the past 30 days would increase from 11.1 per cent to 14.3 per cent among women and from 19.6 per cent to 22 per cent among men," Dr Truong revealed.

Home Office figures suggest that simple alcohol advice could result in 250,000 men and 67,500 women reducing their drinking levels from hazardous and harmful to low-risk every year.
