Rehab News:Alcoholics 'must show willingness to recover'

Alcohol addiction is an illness that people must want to recover from before they will succeed, a recovering alcoholic has said.

William Moyers, a spokesman at the US centre Hazelden, made the comment in relation to claims that celebrities are more likely to deny they have an addiction than other people.

Experts believe that celebrities are often more seriously ill before they seek alcohol treatment, as they tend to get away with a lot more, Reuters reports.

Mr Moyers, who has now been sober for 13 years, said that celebrities "have the trappings of success and a support structure that keeps them from plunging as quickly as the rest of us".

"Addiction is a chronic illness that does not discriminate and recovery is only going to happen when that person shows a willingness and a desire to get well," he added.

One celebrity who seems to have found a good enough reason to get better is country music singer Keith Urban, who successfully completed a residential alcohol treatment programme in California earlier this year.

When asked whether it was hard to cope without alcohol, he replied: "Actually it's not. The other way for me was much tougher because I was not really living.

"I was choosing the option not to feel and in the last few months I've felt that I'm alive, engaged in my own life, present and accountable."
