Rehab News:Alcohol treatment may reduce cancer risk
Researchers have found an added incentive for people to seek alcohol treatment, with the discovery that people who stop drinking can significantly reduce their risk of head or neck cancers.
Research has previously shown a link between alcohol consumption and an increased risk of for oesophageal, laryngeal and oral cancers.
A study led by Dr Jurgen Rehm, principal investigator at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), has now found that while the risk of oesophageal cancer nearly doubles in the first two years following alcohol cessation, this risk then decreases 'rapidly and significantly'.
By the time a person has abstained from alcohol for 20 years, the risk of developing head and neck cancer is the same as for people who have never been alcoholics.
Dr Rehm said that the results could have important implications for tailoring alcohol policies, especially in people with a family history of cancer.
"Alcohol cessation has very similar effects on risk for head and neck cancers as smoking cessation has on lung cancer," the expert revealed.
"It takes about two decades before the risk is back to the risk of those who were never drinkers or never smokers."
