Rehab News:Alcohol treatment for under 18s up sharply

British teenagers under the age of 18 requiring hospital treatment for alcohol related illnesses has increased by 40 per cent over the last year, it has emerged.

Government figures from the National Treatment Agency (NTA) reported by the Daily Telegraph revealed that 6,707 under-18s have been enrolled on alcohol treatment programmes in 2007, 953 of which are between 12 and 14 years old.

Experts told the newspaper that ease of access enjoyed by British youngsters to alcohol and the greater sensitivity of girls to its effects has contributed to the increase in treatment levels.

A spokeswoman for NTA argued that although the 40 per cent increase "may look alarming", the sharp rise indicates successful government action in tackling alcoholism in Britain.

"This means more young people are getting access to treatment and it is important to say that not all these are alcoholics," she said.

New legislation introduced in areas of the US has enabled fines to be imposed on parents who allow their children to drink at their property when house parties result in the requirement of police assistance to break up a disturbance, the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation reports.
