Rehab News:Alcohol treatment 'need not mean abstinence'

Two books published by the same publishing house have ignited a debate on how best to tackle alcohol dependence.

While one of the books is in support of the methodology espoused by Alcoholics Anonymous - ie giving up alcohol completely - the other suggests that drinking in moderation is still an option for recovering alcoholics.

Dr Jack Hedblom, a psychotherapist in Maryland, believes the AA programme is the most viable option and rationalises the organisation's modus operandi in his book Last Call.

Meanwhile, Dr Michael Levy, author of Take Control of Your Drinking...And You May Not Need to Quit, believes that the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step programme is overly spiritual and unnecessarily preaches abstinence.

He considers alcohol treatment is more successful if the underlying causes of drinking are addressed.

Both books are published by Johns Hopkins University Press.
