Rehab News:Alcohol support workers give support to suspects
A pioneering scheme in Plymouth is seeking to provide advice on
alcohol treatment to suspects in police cells in a bid to reduce the level of binge drinking in the city.
People who have been arrested are interviewed by alcohol support workers to determine whether they may have a drink problem.
If so, they are offered advice on where to seek the necessary help and alcohol treatment, the BBC reports.
More than 1,000 suspects have already taken part in the scheme and a number of other police forces are now interested in setting up similar schemes in their own areas.
Chief superintendent Jim Webster revealed that suspects are typically assessed the morning after they have been arrested.
"At that point people are pretty open to a conversation," he explained.
"People are sobering up and they can see the consequences of their drinking. At any other time, the immediacy and upset has gone."
Home Office figures suggest that 8.2 million people in England are drinking above the sensible level, and around 1.1 million are estimated to be dependent on alcohol.
