Rehab News:Alcohol screening success for emergency patients

According to research, it is possible to lower rates of risky drinking in emergency department patients by talking to them about their alcohol use.

A study supported by America's National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism found that patients who underwent a face-to-face alcohol screening, whether or not they were in hospital with alcohol related conditions, reported lower rates of risky drinking three months later than those who only received written information.

The research, carried out at 14 hospitals throughout the US, found that more than a quarter of patients exceeded the limit for low-risk drinking and more than a thousand of these took part in the study.

NIAAA director Ting-Kai Li said: "This encouraging finding raises the prospect of reaching many individuals whose alcohol misuse might otherwise go untreated."

Trials in Scotland that see patients with conditions that could be related to a high alcohol intake being screened by their GP before being offered further advice have enjoyed high rates of success.
