Rehab News:Alcohol related deaths on the rise

The number of alcohol-related deaths in Britain is one the rise, official figures have revealed.

According to the Office for National Statistics figures, there were 13.4 alcohol-related deaths per 100,000 in 2006, compared with 12.9 in the preceding year and 6.9 in 1991.

The mortality rate in men stands at 18.3 deaths per 100,000, more than double the 8.8 deaths per 100,000 in the female population.

Frank Soodeen, of the charity Alcohol Concern, told the BBC: "These figures reveal some disturbing trends. For the second year in a row, the biggest rise in deaths has been among men aged 35 to 54.

"It is vital that the government finally starts investing more in alcohol treatment to help problem drinkers address these issues before the situation becomes irretrievable."

Alcohol-related problems cost Scotland around £1.1 billion per year, according to Alcohol Focus Scotland.
