Alcohol is directly responsible for the deaths of 8,000 people every year in Wales and contributes to the deaths of 5,000 more, according to official statistics.

Wales, along with the rest of the UK has one of the worst binge-drinking records in Europe. Local councils, such as that found in Gwynnedd, are now stepping up their campaign efforts to educate people on the dangers of alcohol.

The Gwynedd Community Safety Partnership will be distributing posters all over the county this month to warn of the dangers of excessive drinking, explained councilor John Wyn Williams.

"We are urging members of the public to be careful when they are enjoying themselves over the summer. It is important to remember that your judgment and co-ordination can be affected when you drink alcohol," he said.

"Our message is for everyone to enjoy themselves on Gwynedd beaches over the next few weeks, but remember not to ruin your holiday. Remember that alcohol doesn't mix with everything.

According to the Schools Health Education Unit, alcohol consumption is a growing problem for children of increasingly young ages in the UK.

Surveying 20,000 school children aged 14 and 15 they found that a quarter of girls and one fifth of boys get drunk at least once a week, on a mixture of beers, wines and spirits.
