Rehab News:Alcohol forum praised for 'vital service'

A group designed to fill gaps in the provision of alcohol treatment services on the Scottish island of Arran has been praised by the Queens Nursing Institute Scotland (QNIS).

Arran Alcohol Forum was established in 2001 to find ways to tackle the problem of alcohol abuse among the island's young people.

The group received a Partnership in Practice award from the QNIS in 2006 and has used the award to produce leaflets aimed at both youngsters and parents.

Nurse director Julia Quickfall visited Arran recently and found that the group was playing an important role in increasing awareness of heavy drinking.

Ms Quickfall said that the Arran Alcohol Forum provides "a vital service on the island that must be recognised".

"Sometimes people forget that Arran is not exempt from problems like underage drinking," she told the Arran Banner.

"The forum has very successfully tackled these problems and highlighted the consequences to their parents."

Although English people tend to drink more frequently than those in Scotland, Scots are more likely to exceed daily benchmarks, according to the charity Alcohol Focus Scotland.
