Rehab News:Alcohol dependency is increasing amongst women

A recent study has revealed that drinking and alcohol dependency among women has increased significantly since 1945. The increase has been noted particularly in white and Hispanic women who were born after 1945.

These findings, published recently in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, found lower levels of abstinence from alcohol, and higher levels of alcohol dependence, even when looking only at women who drank.

To find these results the researchers analysed two large national surveys carried out ten years apart. The surveys compared lifetime alcohol-use rates from the same age groups and demographics.

Researchers suggest that these changes could be due to the higher levels of problems facing women since the Second World War. Another suggested influencing factor is the increase in social acceptability of womens drinking.
The paper Secular Trends in the Lifetime Prevalence of Alcohol Dependence in the United States: A Re-evaluation was published in the May 2008 of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.
