Rehab News:Alcohol company calls for responsible drinking

A Scottish drinks company has urged greater cooperation between the drinks industry and government to increase responsible drinking, according to the Beverage Daily.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has become the latest drinks company to focus on targeting the rising problem of alcohol abuse in the UK at a forum about responsible drinking.

SWA chief executive Gavin Hewitt spoke at the Scottish Parliament forum alongside Robert Madelin, a health official from the European Commission, as well as the managing director of drinks company Diageo in Britain.

The trade website reported that Mr Hewitt told the forum at the Scottish Parliament that more needs to be done to decrease irresponsible alcohol use, such as binge drinking, in Scotland.

Referring to recent figures that revealed levels of irresponsible drinking in Scotland were falling, he said: "It is good news that our message is getting through but it is also clear more must be done to reach the minority who continue to drink irresponsibly."

During 2006-07 there was a rise in the number of general acute hospital discharges with an alcohol-related diagnosis in Scotland, up to 41,651 from 40,745 the previous year.
