Rehab News:Addressing sleep perceptions may benefit recovering alcoholics
Alcoholics may be more likely to benefit from alcohol treatment if they learn to change the way they view alcohol's impact on sleep, researchers have suggested.
A University of Michigan study found that individuals who are recovering from
alcoholism are more likely to start drinking again if they have inaccurate sleep perceptions.
Postdoctoral fellow Deirdre Conroy, who conducted the research, explained: "The usual perception of alcohol's effects on sleep in non-alcoholics is that it helps sleep.
"If a recovering
alcoholic is irritable because they are not getting quality sleep at night, they might be more vulnerable to return to drinking."
Dr Conroy advised doctors who are working with alcohol dependent patients "to have a differential of poor sleep quality in the back of their mind as a potential challenge for the patients throughout alcohol recovery".
Timothy Roehrs, director of research at the Sleep Disorders and Research Centre at Henry Ford Hospital, added: "The clinician should pay attention to the
alcoholic's sleep complaints as the complaint of poor sleep predicts relapse."
The study appears in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.
