Rehab News:Addicts 'may have cognitive differences'

New research has suggested that there may be cognitive differences in people who suffer from addiction.

A study appearing in the Journal of Neuroscience found that the brains of people with alcohol addiction "may compute information less efficiently", according to Charlotte Boettiger, assistant professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Ms Boettiger was lead author on the study, which used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to look at brain activity and discover what happens when sober alcoholics make decisions.

The findings show that people who prefer immediate rewards - the majority of whom had a history of alcoholism - tended to have reduced activity in the orbital frontal cortex of the brain.

The lead author explained: "Think of the orbital frontal cortex as the brakes. With the brakes on, people choose for the future; without the brakes they choose for the short-term gain."

She also noted that while there are underlying genetic and biological factors that contribute to alcoholism, the disease is "triggered by the choices people make".

"It wasn't that long ago that we believed schizophrenia was caused by bad mothers and depression wasn't a disease. Hopefully in ten years, we'll look back and it will seem silly that we didn't think addiction was a disease, too," she concluded.
