Rehab News:Acupuncture and massage used in alcohol treatment

Acupuncture and Reiki massage is being used in greater Manchester to help treat people with alcohol problems and has proved so popular that workloads have doubled.

Bolton, Salford and Trafford Mental Health NHS Trust runs regular sessions at Stash - the Salford and Trafford Action on Street Health, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Aromatherapist and Reiki massage practitioner Janet Jones has doubled her workload as word of the therapies has spread.

"Clients can be sceptical but most give it a go. Many say they feel much better afterwards," Ms Jones said.

In a placebo controlled study at the Department of Medicine, University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis acupuncture was found to benefit severe recidivist alcoholics.

In the study eighty severe recidivist alcoholics were randomly assigned to one of two groups. Members of one group were given acupuncture at points specific for the treatment of substance abuse (treatment group) and members of the other group were given a placebo treatment at non-specific points (control group).

Twenty one people in the acupuncture group successfully completed the programme compared to only one person in the control group.

The study concluded that acupuncture could greatly enhance the success of alcoholic and drug abuse support programmes.

The research was published in the Lancet.
