Rehab News:Abstinence leads to 'burst' of new brain cells

Studies on animals have uncovered a burst of new brain cell formation during abstinence from alcohol.

Research on adult rats, which had been given alcohol in amounts that led to physical alcohol dependency, showed a significant increase in the formation of new nerve cells in the hippocampus within four to five weeks of abstinence from alcohol.

In particular, the scientists noted a two-fold increase in brain cell proliferation seven days after cessation of drinking.

Dr Fulton Crews, director of the University of North Carolina's Bowles Centre for Alcohol Studies, revealed: "When used in excess, alcohol damages brain structure and function. Alcoholics have impairments in the ability to reason, plan or remember.

"And when they stop drinking, you can show in a period of weeks, months, years, the brain grows back, there's a return of metabolic activity, and cognitive tests show a return of function."

The scientists suggested that the findings, which are published in the Journal of Neuroscience, could have implications for treating people who are in recovery from alcoholism.
